Construction underway on new 3G pitch at The Nest

As well as providing the opportunity for more local football clubs to use The Nest for training and matches, the new 3G will allow the Foundation to expand its current community offerings.

Construction is underway on a brand new 3G pitch at The Nest.

The full-sized pitch, which will be floodlit, will sit adjacent to the existing Norfolk Hire Arena, and is due to be completed by September.

The majority of the £1.17m project has been funded by the Premier League, The FA and Government via the Football Foundation, with the remaining funds provided by the Norwich City Community Sports Foundation.

As well as providing the opportunity for more local football clubs to use The Nest for training and matches, the new 3G will allow the Foundation to expand its current community offerings.

These include introductory football courses aimed at girls, walking football sessions for over-50s and Team Talk, a mental wellbeing focussed initiative.

It will also provide additional space for the charity’s disability team to deliver its weekly programmes, and for the Foundation’s Onside project, a targeted intervention programme that works with children at risk of becoming involved in violent youth crime.

Beyond football, the new pitch will also provide a space for other sports.

These include Run For Me, the Foundation’s weekly mental wellbeing focussed running group, and the weekly Run Norwich running group.

A new partnership with the Norfolk Cricket Board will see cricket played at The Nest for the first time, with a series of inclusive and introductory sessions to take place on the new 3G.

Jackie Thornton, Head of Development at the Foundation, said:

“Over 10,000 people visit the site every month, and our current 3G pitch is at capacity. The additional pitch will allow us to support more teams, more players and more people.

“We’d like to thank the Football Foundation for this latest phase of incredible support. They’ve been instrumental in sharing our vision and helping us transform The Nest from a derelict site to a thriving community hub.”

The Nest opened in 2017 and currently boasts football pitches, conference and meeting spaces, residential bunkboxes, a café and a Challenge Woods playground all set over 22-acres.
