What is an NHS Health Check?

The NHS Health Check is a free check-up of your overall health designed to help spot early signs of conditions that can develop as we get older. It can help reduce your risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, heart disease, kidney disease and stroke, and support you to stay healthier for longer.

 Who is eligible?

If you are aged 40 – 74 and have not already been diagnosed with one of the above conditions, you are entitled to a free NHS Health Check every five years. The check assesses whether you are at low, medium or high risk, and provides personalised advice on what you can do next to reduce your risk.

You are eligible if you:

  • Are aged between 40 – 74
  • Are registered with a Norfolk GP or live in Norfolk
  • Are not currently being treated by your GP for an existing diagnosed vascular condition
  • Have not had an NHS Health Check in the last five years

What does the Health Check involve?

  • Lifestyle and health questions
A short chat about your lifestyle, medical history and whether close family members have had relevant health conditions.
  • Basic measurements
Height, weight, age, gender and ethnicity are recorded to calculate your Body Mass Index (BMI).
  • Blood pressure check
A quick test using a cuff on your upper arm.
  • Cholesterol test
Usually a simple fingerprick blood test (occasionally a sample from the arm).
  • Personal risk assessment
You’ll receive your 10year cardiovascular risk score (low, medium or high).
  •  Tailored health advice
Personalised guidance to help you stay healthy or lower your risk, including advice on diet, physical activity and stopping smoking.
  • Additional support for over65s
Information on the signs and symptoms of dementia to be aware of.
  • Followup if needed
If results suggest higher risk, you may be contacted for further tests or a discussion with your GP about next steps.
